Abigail Copeland (Abbey) is a scenic designer, professor, and artist residing in New Haven, Connecticut. Throughout her career, she has specialized in creating sets, costumes, and environments for new and non-traditional works. Most recently, this has included Professor Woland’s Black Magic Rock Show, a new musical based on the classic novel The Master and Margarita developed at Quinnipiac University (CT) and Spooky Action Theater (Washington D.C.). Other recent new works include Friend Animals (a new play by Marella Martin Koch developed with the Midnight Oil Collective), Bulgaria! Revolt!, Thebes, and RAGE. She especially relishes the challenge of designing for new work, devising with collaborators from different places, and working hands on to build and paint unique theatrical worlds.
Abigail has designed for Spooky Action Theater, Quinnipiac University, Connecticut Repertory Theatre, and UConn Opera. Along with designing for the Theatre Arts Center at Quinnipiac, she is the Associate Professor of Theatre Design within the program. She is also a frequent collaborator with the women-owned MoonAmie Productions in Miami, Florida, designing out-of-the-box sets for young people to experience performing on a professional level. In her home state of Indiana, Abigail has worked with The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (Lilly Theatre), The Indiana Repertory Theatre, The Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre, Indianapolis Opera, QArtistry, NoExit Performance, and Hoosier Bard, the performance arm of the New Oxford Shakespeare Project. Abroad, she was a founding member of stella* performance collective and worked with seven sisters group on a project commissioned by the Victoria & Albert Museum. Abigail’s theatre skills also extend to scenic painting, which she has been practicing for over 15 years.
